the plates centering the arms and crest of Warren impaling Mangles encircled by two plain gilt bands to a faux grey veined marble dish ending with a gilt husk pattern chain trim, the reverse with maroon, "BARR FLIGHT & BARR Royal Porcelain Works | Worcester | London House No. 1 Coventry Street," mark with impressed crown over, "B.F.B.," monogram. Diameter: 9 5/8"

  • Notes: James Mangles (1762-1838), MP of Woodbridge, near Guildford, Surrey. James Mangles was known as a chandlery dealer, inheriting his father's business and running it with his brothers John and Robert (joined 1805) beginning in 1788. In 1817 the brothers were listed as Mangles & Co. and Wharfingers. He was last noted in 1803 as an established landed proprietor at Woodbridge, Surrey, whilst maintaining an interest in Rotherhithe mercantile concerns. Reference: Powerhouse Museum Collection, Sydney, Australia, object no. A2986, purchased and acquired November 18, 1936. Victoria & Albert Museum Collection, United Kingdom, Porcelain Plate, museum number C.495-1935, gallery location: Ceramics Study Galleries, Britain & Europe, room 139, case 15, shelf 7. A correspondence between Wayne Cox and the Somerset Herald College of Arms, London, from July 7-8, 2013, answers the question, "...what year James Mangles received a grant of arms?" In reply, "A grant of arms...was made to John Mangles of Wapping in 1801."
  • Condition: Some gilt rubbing, soil to foot and minor surface wear.
