Lot 360
TWO "KOBAKO" CLEAR AND FROSTED GLASS PERFUME BOTTLES AND PRESENTATION, FOR BOURJOIS, CIRCA 1936, designed by Eduard Fornells (Spanish 1887-1947), both flacons formed in the likeness of an antique Chinese snuff bottle, the squat rounded flacon with slightly scalloped edges framing a small circular red embossed gilt paper label naming the scent and perfumer, sinuous tendrils of foliage cover the bottle and almond shaped stopper, comprising a flacon with the corded collar retaining original silvered circular hang tag embossed "Bourjois/New York/Contents 1 1/4 oz.," cream paper label marked in red stating the same underfoot, height: 3"; accompanied by the original bakelite presentation case, designed to emulate fine carved cinnabar, the tall oxblood lid featuring raised lotus flowers reversing to the back with central raised tie, the presentation base in the form of an ebonized hardwood stand; along with a matching .5 oz. bottle retaining original perfume, height: 2 1/2". NOTE: It is a common misunderstanding that this bottle and presentation was designed by René Lalique (French 1860-1945). In fact, it was designed by Eduard Fornells and manufactured by Verreries Brosse. Eduard Fornells worked for Lalique for a number of years before becoming an independent specialist in early plastics and packaging, particularly for perfume and cosmetic companies, such as Bourjois, Lalique, Rogers et Gallet, and others. Special thanks to the Modern and Contemporary Department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and to Grace E. Hummel.
- Condition: Both flacons in good condition, with no apparent major chips, cracks, or repairs. The 1 1/4 oz. bottle has been emptied of original perfume, but has a layer of film on the bottom of the interior. The small front gilt paper label is also slightly tarnished. The corresponding case in fine condition, with very few scratches. Simpson Galleries strongly encourages in-person inspection of items by the bidder.
